Wendell — Town commissioners moved forward with an annexation request last week after the owner of the property asked to have the entire tract included in the town limits.

The Anderson family heirs had requested the town annex a 127-acre tract off Battle Bridge Road so it could be developed.

But David Anderson, one of the heirs who is leading the effort to develop the property, did not include a nine-acre section of the land in his original annexation request.

That caused commissioners some concern, because most of the land around the nine-acre tract would have been included in the town limits.

Commissioners were set to deny the request to annex the property Monday night.

But on Friday prior to the meeting, Anderson made an additional annexation request that included the nine acres.

Still, the request gave town leaders some reason for pause. Instead of making a single application for the entire property, the request was for separate annexations.

Mayor Harold Broadwell asked town attorney Jim Cauley what Anderson would have to do to withdraw an annexation request.

Cauley said he could simply ask for the request to be withdrawn, but he added that commissioners could approve one annexation request contingent upon the other request.

Anderson wanted to carve out the nine-acre section of the property that includes an historic home which he plans to restore and live in.

Anderson told members of the Wendell Planning Board that he plans to use the proceeds from the development of the remaining property to pay for the restoration of the historic home which dates to the 1830s.
